Jambo. Okay…for starters I lied earlier…It’s technically Kaw
heri- “good bye”. Ha…I clearly didn’t understand Iga earlier and Jess corrected
me after I said it wrong to the TukTuk driver, Casim. So we started this
morning by going to the Hospital and I didn’t take my camera with me so I’ll
have to post pictures tomorrow. It is totally and completely different than any
hospital you have ever seen, I promise. The main hallways are actually outdoors
and there is CATS running around everywhere. We met with James, the nursing
director and he took us on a tour through the hospital and the various wards we
would be working on. There are 10 general wards, 3 maternity, 1 amenity ward.
Other services include physiotherapy, laboratory (blood work), pharmacy, Occupational
therapy, and Orthopedics. This is the second largest hospital in Kenya, and
there are only 320 nurses!! That is CRAZY- The emergency Department at OSF has
over 300 employees itself, which is where I work now. The leading causes of
mortality at Coast Province General (the hospital I’m working at) are
Pneumonia, ARC (effects of HIV/AIDS), Malaria, Pulmonary Tuberculosis, &
G/E.
I am very excited to be working on the maternity
floors-specializing in Labor and Delivery and Postpartum. The last three days
of staying here I will be working in the “CCC”. The “CCC” is the Comprehensive
Care Center which manages cases of HIV/AIDS and HIV/AIDS related illnesses.
This is a very common and scary disease in Africa and health promotion and
prevention is definitely needed to be put in place in more effective ways.
After our orientation at the hospital we came back for lunch
and relaxed for about 45 minutes. Jess and I then went for a run down to the
beach. Then Sang and us girls went to the mall (which is by far the nicest
place we have been yet) and did a little shopping at the super market and
exchanged money. Dolores, our house mother, had dinner prepared for us when we
got back and we just got through eating dinner! Now we are just going to visit
and relax before our first day on the floor at the hospital tomorrow! Enjoy the
few pictures! J
This is our ride to the hospital and the city!...It is a tuk
tuk
first day before the hospital!
